Khalifa – Le General

The General is also known as, Khalifa Ababacar Dieye, apprenticed under a grand master of painting, Bourkinabe Rkote Damba, in Saint Louis, Senegal. During this period he learned about the use of symbolism and spiritualism in art. He migrated to Dakar when his teacher left the country. He was able to survive as a starving artist by establishing a small workshop on the path down to Mamelles beach. There he began making a name for himself by mixing realism and abstract images, while addressing thematic concepts like racism, negritude, and poverty. His look-alike Jean-Michel Basquiat, inspires him, as does the concept of social justice.
